A Fly for an Alarm Clock: Answered Prayer

With no alarm clock anywhere in the house and a 6am flight to catch after a 1am bedtime, one engaged couple prayed for a way to wake up on time — and were woken by a single, loudly buzzing fly at the exact right minute. This simple but memorable answered prayer story shows God's provision doesn't always look the way you'd expect.

After a late night finishing errands before an early flight, Dr. John Ashton and his fiancée realized there was no alarm clock anywhere in his mother's house and no way to guarantee they'd wake in time to catch their 7am flight. Praying for peace and trusting the outcome to God, Dr. Ashton fell asleep — only to wake to a single fly buzzing insistently right beside his ear. Glancing at his watch, it read exactly 6:00am, the precise time he needed to wake. The fly then disappeared entirely, with no other flies found anywhere in the house before or after.

It is all too often said that there are no miracles performed these days. Well I'd like to challenge this idea with my story of a fly that was an alarm clock. Welcome to miracles in the 21st century. I'm Dr. John Ashton. Many years ago, just after I was engaged I'd gone up to visit my mother in Cairns and my fiance flew up from Sydney to meet my mother. And of course at that time there were lots of things to do but we could only stay about a week and then we had to return back to Sydney and then down to Tasmania for work. And the last evening we were there there was so much to do. I remember we didn't get to bed and until 1 o'clock in the morning and yet we had to get up at 6am to catch a flight out of from Cairns airport that was leaving at 7:00. Back in those days they didn't have the same security arrangements as today and as I had my mother had gone to bed and as I had a look around in the house I couldn't find any alarm clocks. My mother didn't have any alarm clocks and I felt so tired and my fiance, she had already gone to bed as well and I thought how are we going to make sure that we wake up in time? I don't want to stay awake all the time but I. Because you know I'll be just so tired. But I feel that if I fall asleep I could easily oversleep past that time And I prayed about it and I was given peace and I fell asleep and the next thing I knew was this buzzing, really annoying buzzing in my ear and I woke up and this fly was just hovering around my ear buzzing really loud and I woke up and then I realised and I looked to cock at my watch and it was exactly 6 o'clock and I poked around, then the fly had gone. There were no other flies around and I can never forget that happening. That amazing answer to prayer how God woke me up using a fly at exactly 6 o'clock on that morning and we safely caught our plane back to Sydney.
