Carol Sedgman shares her miracle testimony — how God led her from Jamaica to Australia, to the wrong person, and into 58 wonderful years of marriage. A true story of divine guidance and answered prayer.

Born in Jamaica to a German-Jewish family and raised Seventh-day Adventist, Carol grew up believing God would lead her life — and He did, in the most unexpected way. At just 20 years old, she made a bold move halfway across the world, following what she believed was God's prompting. But when she arrived in Australia, she discovered God had a completely different plan in mind.

What started as a journey to reconnect with someone from her past became the miracle of a lifetime — a marriage of 58 years, 4 beautiful children, and a faith made unshakeable by answered prayer.

"I know without a doubt in my mind that that was providential and God was leading."

It's all too often said that there are no miracles performed these days, but I'd like to challenge this idea with my story of how God led me to Australia. Welcome to Miracles in the 21st Century. I'm Carol Sedgman. My story begins in a little island called Jamaica. My parents were born there. I was born there, and my background is German-Jew. My mom came from a German background. My dad came from a Jewish background. And we were all born in Jamaica. Now, my mother became a Seventh-day Adventist when I was before I was born, actually. And so we were brought up in a Christian family. And yeah, I thank God for that because you become praying Christians. And I always prayed and I had Bible studies as I was growing up. And knowing that God would lead my life. And I was about 12 or 13 when an Australian family came to live in Jamaica as missionaries, and we got to know them very well. And their son, we were kind of like, I guess you could say, we were going out, you know, he was like my boyfriend. And I was only very young, and when I was 15, that family left and went back to Australia. Now during the years of when I was 15 to when I turned 20, later on in the years, I had a boyfriend who was not a Seventh-day Adventist. And I did not feel that God was guiding me to get married to him. So I contacted the family that the missionaries were here and in Jamaica. They were living in Australia. And I contacted them and said, I would like to come to Australia. And they said, sure. They organized everything for me. And Yeah, I arrived in Australia when I was 20, just before I turned 21, and got to know the family again. And anyway, so I soon realized that even though I'd come to Australia thinking that we would get married, I realized that we were not suited. And so it was quite okay. It happened to work out very well that this boy that I came out to Australia to be with, we were not suited to get married. So we were still friends. We were still friends for many, many years. And one of his friends, he had a group of friends that used to go to church together, and one of his friends was, his name is John, and he was kind of being very kind to me, looking after me while I was here all by myself and a bit homesick. And yeah, eventually we started going out and in 6 months he asked me to marry him and we got engaged and 6 months later we got married. Now, I thank God for my husband. We have had 58 wonderful years of marriage, and I thank God that He guided me to come to Australia and to meet John and to get married. So now we have got— I know that that was definitely a miracle. Yes. Because, yeah, otherwise I would never have come to Australia if it wasn't God's leading through prayer. And so now we have got 4 beautiful children, 2 girls and a boy, 3 girls and a boy. And yeah, I thank God for His guidance because— I have no idea what would have happened if I had not come to Australia. And I know without a doubt in my mind that that was providential and God was leading. And I want to say, thank you for listening and may God bless you. Thank you.
